Raj Kaur is an artist and graphic designer living and working in London.

Raj graduated from Central St. Martins in 2000 and has since, successfully balanced her work as a designer with her studio practice developing her artworks.

Previously an artist in residence at Redlees Studios - West London, she now works from her own studio space.

Raj’s figurative drawings on paper strive to capture the essence, energy and spirit of the human experience through the exploration of movement and expressive mark making. Taking inspiration from her Indian heritage, she injects her work with hot, vibrant colour that works in contrast to a natural earthy palette, derived from more traditional media.

Music plays an integral part of Raj’s working process. The life models she works with have trained in dance or bodywork, and allow poses to ‘emerge’ from their own interpretation of the music played.

Each drawing session is unique and the methods used are about a process of ‘discovery’ and engagement between artist and model to produce surprising, tender and often emotional works.

Raj has been mentored by renowned artist Bella Pieroni, who was tutored by former students of the visionary artist Cecil Collins. Her inspirations also include the work of the British artist Anthony Gormley.

Raj will be exhibiting her figurative life drawing at 'The Other Art Fair' on 24th-27th November 2011, at The Bargehouse, London Southbank, SE1.
